The European Recycling Coalition
As the EU evolves towards a Recycling Society – the
context is being clarified and redefined by revisions of the
Framework Directive on Waste.
Recycling and recycling industries play a significant and crucial role in meeting the European recycling, resource use and climate protection objectives.
The Importance of Recycling
- Recycling industries contribute to the EU’s
Lisbon agenda for sustainable growth and
jobs.
- 90 % of material recyclers in the EU are
SMEs, which contribute to the development
of local and regional economies.
- Recycling reduces the use of energy and
virgin materials and their associated
environmental impacts.
- Recycling of plastics, tyres and waste oils,
all derived from petroleum, reduces reliance
upon crude oil imports.
- Composting clean organic waste, not only means the recovery of urgently needed organic matter for European soils (40 % show severe shortcomings), but the saving of phosphorous, a limited resource for which reserves do not exceed 100 years.
